Some Quick Online Poker Tips

If you’ve never played poker before, one of the easiest and most fun ways to start is by playing the game online.   If you’ve played, but only live, playing online can still be interesting.  There are some things that online poker players need to know that differ from live play, though.

Online Poker Tips- Avoid Stress Play:

It can be tempting to escape into the computer when you are stressed.   However, just like in live poker, stress can lead to mistakes in how you play online.  If you are stressed, it makes it easier to make mistakes that you wouldn’t otherwise make.

Another thing about playing when stressed is that it makes you more likely to lose your temper when you lose a hand on a bad beat.   Going “on tilt” is one of the biggest causes of losses in poker.  You can’t let your emotions get the better of you in a game, regardless of whether you’re playing online or off.

Start Slow:

You should also start slow, if you’re just beginning to play online, one way is reading online poker tips.  That’s especially true when you’re new to playing poker, in general.   Luckily, most online poker rooms have free tables where you can practice.  You can eventually work your way up to low-limit money tables and then higher-limit, if you want to.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you can play multiple tables online at the same time, if you want to.  That’s something that can’t be done in live games.  More hands per hour doesn’t necessarily mean more money, though.   It can be easy to get distracted and make bad decisions at that pace.  So, you shouldn’t play multiple tables until you’re really ready for it.

Learn Quick Card Interpretation:

Beside of reading online poker tips you should know that online poker is, as stated above, a fast-paced thing.  So, it helps if you can interpret the cards that you are seeing quickly.  After all, most of the time you will only have 30 seconds or less to act in a hand.    Learn to recognize good starting hands and good flops and you’ll save yourself and everyone else a lot of time and trouble later on.

Watch Your Money:

You also need to watch your money.  Don’t deposit more than you care to lose.  Set limits for yourself before you play.  If you can learn to quit at the right times, whether winning or losing, you should be able to minimize your losses and maximize your wins.   Just remember, you will lose a lot of the time.   It’s part of the game and something that you should plan for.

Play To Win:

Finally, if you’re interested in playing online tournament games, always play to win.  Don’t join a tournament unless you can clear your schedule for it.  If you’ll have to go after an hour or two, you can’t win.  So, you shouldn’t waste your time, especially if you have to pay a tournament entry fee.   Even if you’re playing a freeroll tournament, though, you should always have your eyes on the prize, not just hope to place well.
