Surviving Bad Beats in Texas Holdem

Texas Holdem poker can be an emotional game.  After all, it’s a roller coaster ride, with many highs and many lows along the way.  The problem, though, is that you can’t show your emotions at the poker tables.  If you do, you make yourself an easy target.  That’s why learning how to handle problems, such as bad beats, is so important.

What is a Bad Beat?

A bad beat in Holdem is when you start off with the best hand, but wind up being beaten by someone whose cards should have been worse.  For example, pretend that you’re sitting at a poker table holding pocket queens.  It’s a great hand, right?  Now pretend that your opponent is holding pocket twos and, for some strange reason, they stay in the hand.  Now, pretend that the flop comes and shows another two.  Your opponent has now made three of a kind, which beats your pair.  That’s a bad beat.

The Problem with a Bad Beat:

The problem with a bad beat is not the bad beat itself.  After all, everyone loses a poker hand from time to time.  Chances are that you’ll still have chips left and keep playing, though.  That brings us to the problem.

You see, when people take a bad beat, they sometimes let it affect their play later on.  If you want to succeed at poker, you can’t do that.  You have to be able to mentally let a hand go and concentrate on the hand you’re currently playing.

Compounding the Problem:

The trouble doesn’t stop there.  It has a snowball effect.  If you lose to a bad beat, you could lose the next hand and the next hand after that, since your decision making may be influenced by your emotions.  That will all just make you more frustrated and you’ll lose more.  Those mistakes can add up in a hurry and really put a dent in your chip stack.

Discipline and Focus:

Playing Texas Holdem successfully requires that you have discipline and focus.  You can’t let bad beats get to you.  In fact, that’s a crucial part of learning the game.  Yes, knowing the basic rules of the game is important.  Knowing how to control your emotions is key too, though.  So, it’s definitely worth practicing.

One way to practice is online.  Playing on the Internet, you can often focus better than if you were playing in an actual casino.  There are less distractions playing online.  It’s a convenient and comfortable way to play the game while you learn the art of emotional control.

What to Do If You Take a Bad Beat:

If you take a bad beat playing Texas Holdem, there are a few things you can do.  If you’re playing it from your home online, for instance, you could just get up and get a drink or take a quick shower, whatever calms you down.  Folding a few hands to do something else will be well worth it, if it calms your nerves.

In a live poker game, it can be a little harder to take a long break.  You can still get a drink, go to the bathroom and splash water on your face or get up and stretch, though.  You can also try listening to relaxing music or doing breathing exercises to calm your temper.  Poker is all about emotional control, remember.
