A Guide to Learning Texas Holdem Poker

If you watch poker on TV, you’ve probably noticed that Texas Holdem is the most widely televised game.  It’s also one of the most popular poker games played in casinos and online.  If you want to get in on the fun, though, you have to understand the rules of the game, or, more accurately, games.

Poker Basics:

One thing that you need to understand is that poker is a family of games.  You should start by understanding basic universal poker rules.  For instance, you should memorize the hand ranking system.  After all, if you think that something like a pair beats something like a straight, you’re going to lose.  So, that’s a great place to start.

Another thing you should learn, as far as poker basics, is the betting procedure.  Most poker games have forced bets that are either antes paid by all players at the start of a hand or blinds paid by just two players at the start of a hand.  Some games even have both.

Another Reason to Know Good Hands:

Another reason to know what good hands are in Holdem is to be able to spot whether or not your opponent might be on a hand.  You see, in Holdem, each person gets two hole cards, but there are also five community cards dealt.  So, it’s important to watch the board for possible big hands, like flushes and straights.

Holdem Versions:

Another thing you need to know, as you’re learning to play Holdem, is that there are different versions of the game.  No-limit Texas Holdem is popular, it’s true, but there are also pot limit and fixed limit games.

On top of that, there are cash games, yes, but there are also other Holdem games to be had.  For example, there are turbo games.  There are also satellite tournaments and larger tournaments.  All of them are played at various buy-in levels.  All of those things can factor in to how you play the game.

Holding and Folding:

Another thing you need to learn, in order to play any version of Holdem, is when to hold your cards and when to fold your cards.  Obviously, you aren’t going to play every hand.  So, you need to learn to recognize a good starting hand.

Once you’ve identified that good starting hand, you have to learn how to play it.  You might need to check, limp in or raise.  You might even need to fold later in the hand, if things don’t work out.  You need to resist certain urges in poker.  One of those urges is the urge to play a hand all the way through to the end if it doesn’t work out.  If you’re holding pocket kings and three low cards are dealt on the flop, it’s time to get out of the hand.

Bluffing:

A final important skill you need to know to play Holdem is how to bluff.  You shouldn’t bluff too often or you’ll become predictable.  However, a good bluff here and there can really salvage some hands for you.  So, if you want to be good at Texas Holdem poker, you might want to brush up on your bluffing skills.
